Ghanatasala took formal music training from Patrayani Sitarama Sastry and later enrolled in Maharajah’s Government College of Music and Dance in Vijayanagram. His father died during his childhood, and he was raised by his maternal uncle. Ghanatasala was born in a village in Gudivada taluk of Krishna District. His father, Ghanatasala Soorayya, was a professional singer.
